Vista

So, the official stance on Windows Vista has been announced.  You can read more about it here.

For those of you who aren’t into geeking out, Windows Vista will be the newest version of windows, set to take over from Windows XP sometime later this year.  The only thing that bothers me is that the system is being released in 6 different versions.

How much is this new software going to cost? Judging by reports - it may not only be the software cost that we will have to forefit if we want the new system.  I have read reports on the net the new system that they have made is so power hungry that many users will need to upgrade their pc to be able to run the system in the first place.

I was sceptical when they brought out Windows XP, and I tried it and didnt like it.  I found that there were just too many bugs in the first release for my liking.  I will - no doubt - end up upgrading to vista, but not straight away.  Call me old fasioned, stuck in my way, or a grumpy old fart - but I just dont tust Microsoft to get it right first time.

I also think that what they have done looks, and sounds, a lot like Apple’s os X tiger.  Similar to the way microsoft re-invented Firefox it appears that yet again they have stolen someone elses ideas and done it badly.

Bandits

For those of you who are’nt in the know yet, what is being claimed as, the worlds biggest bank robbery took place on wednesday. For more information you can read about it here.

Now I have been watching the events unfold and I have found it rather comical. The police and the media are claiming that the gang must have spent hours planning this raid. I beg to differ. I can be the first to reveal the true identity of the gang - Joe Blake and Terry Lee Collins.

IE 7

Well, those clever people over at Microsoft have launched Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. For those of you who dont know, IE 7 is the forthcoming version of IE, and beta 2 means that it is in testing phase - basically they release it to people and wait for it to break.

I have played with it a bit, and as expected it has the usual crap complience to CSS - something which as a web developer I find most annoying. There is a loverly website by the W3C which details how to use the standards. You know how China’s government block certain websites, does Microsoft ban its employees from looking at the W3C site?

Also, I think the development cycle went something like this:

  1. Download Firefox.
  2. Screw up Firefox source code to remove complience.
  3. Brand as Microsoft.
  4. Package and make available for download.

In my opinion, as a Firefox user, use Firefox. I know that there are many out there (not many who will be reading this) that “trust” Microsoft and will only use Microsoft products. All they have done here is re-invent the wheel, and badly.

Big thumbs up there Bill.

The IT Crowd

Well, I have been seeing the adverts recently on Channel 4, and I have to say it got me interested.

The IT Crowd started with a double bill on last friday, and I have to say great!

It made me cringe cause I could see the geekiness in them and recognise it in myself, but I dont htink that I am that bad.  As for Roys selection of t-shirts, pure genius - I think that the costume department may have been visiting think geek.
If you didnt see it this week it is repeated all the time on the other channels and the next ep is on friday at 21:30. Enjoy
