Web sites

I would like ot think of my self as somewhat of a professional when it comes to websites.  I mean it is what I do for a job.  I have enough of the bloody things floating about on my server.

What amuses me are these people who design their entire site with images and image maps.  Ok, so it makes your website look pretty but you really dont have a clue do you.

For one reason, it is illegal to not make your website readable to people with disabilities. Secondly, the speed to download.  I know that most people have broadband now-a-days, but what about the poor person stuck on the end of a 56k?

I have nothing against people using images in their website, but not for the website.
It really annoys me for some reason.  Am I being stupid or does anyone else out there share my passion?

It depends, if its an artist using a site for their graphical online portfolio then it has to be images all the way through the site and probably even for the most mundane thing - not least because of the stupid browsers not all making it look the same.

For normal websites though, yes its stupid, no one cares about the high-res massive 1024×800 res image as the background, what especially annoys me is when those images get in the way of what you are trying to read… myspace is fun for that! You can get an effective design with some cleverly gradiented pictures that aren’t too in-yer-face-complex so they should stick to being inventive rather than photoshop-mad.

    Thats my 2p

I would never claim to be a professional such as yourself, more a mere dabbler. That said, the first and last time I used an imagemap for site navigation was seven years ago. They’re hefty to set up and are rarely done with any style. They’re a shortcut to actually learning code.

I know that (a) I’m being predictable and (b) I really should move on, but does anyone else think the Kent Union website looks even worse than their last attempt (if it’s possible to do so)?
